If Windows warns you
“Windows protected your PC”
Snappington is new, and Windows SmartScreen warns about downloads it hasn’t seen many times yet. That reputation builds as more people install Snappington, so the warning should become rarer. The installer is digitally signed by the publisher, so you can check who made it before you run it.
Click More info.
It’s the small link under the warning text.
Check the publisher.
It should show a name. If it says Unknown publisher, don’t run the file: download it again from this page.
Click Run anyway.
Setup starts. When it finishes, Snappington waits in the tray.
After you install
Three things to know.
-
It lives in the tray.
Snappington sits in the notification area next to the clock and waits. Right-click the icon for captures, recording, step capture, the library and settings.
-
Press Print Screen.
Drag a region and the editor opens. The other shortcuts are below, and you can change any of them in Settings.
-
Find it in Pictures.
Captures are saved in
Pictures\Snappingtonas.snptfiles. Move the library anywhere you like.
Default shortcuts
| Capture a region | PrtSc |
|---|---|
| Capture a window | Ctrl Shift PrtSc |
| Capture the full screen | Ctrl PrtSc |
| Scrolling capture | Shift PrtSc |
| Start or stop recording | Alt Shift R |
| Pause recording | Alt Shift P |
| Step capture | Alt Shift S |
Windows 11 can give Print Screen to its own Snipping Tool. If pressing it opens that instead of Snappington, turn off Use the Print screen key to open screen capture in Windows Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard and restart Snappington, or choose another key in Snappington’s settings. Snappington says so itself if it can’t register the key.
System requirements
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit (x64) |
|---|---|
| WebView2 | Part of Windows 11. On Windows 10 the installer checks for Microsoft’s WebView2 runtime and, if it’s missing, downloads it from Microsoft during setup, so that one install needs a connection. Microsoft keeps the runtime updated, separately from Snappington. |
| Internet | Not needed to capture, edit or record. Snappington checks for updates, which you can turn off. Remove Background and captions download their models once, after you agree, and uploads go only to destinations you set up. |
| Graphics | Any. A GPU makes video export faster. |
| Disk | About 60 MB, plus your captures. |
Check the download
GitHub shows each file’s SHA-256 hash next to it on the release page. To compare, run this in PowerShell in your Downloads folder:
> Get-FileHash .\Snappington-Setup.exe
Beta list
Hear it first.
Snappington will become a paid app after the beta. Beta testers will hear first, and your files always stay yours: if you don’t continue, the app still opens, views and exports everything you made.

macOS
On the way.
The Mac version isn’t ready yet, and we won’t pretend otherwise. If you’d like to hear when it is, send an email with “Mac” in the subject. We’ll write once, when it ships.
Meanwhile on Windows
Your .snpt files are plain ZIP, PNG and JSON, so nothing you make today is locked to one operating system.
